Next Steps for International Students

placeholder

All admitted UW Oshkosh students must complete the steps on the Admitted Student Checklist. In addition, international students must complete a few extra steps before classes begin

Visa Application OR SEVIS Transfer Process — F-1 or J-1 Visa From Outside the United States
Once you schedule a visa application interview, or if you receive an interview waiver, immediately contact iss@uwosh.edu to inform us of your scheduled appointment. Also, after your appointment, please inform us of the results. It is crucial that you keep us informed on whether you receive a visa.
If you have entered the United States in F-1 or J-1 status already and have an “ACTIVE” SEVIS Record at another US institution, see the section below for information about how to transfer your SEVIS record to UW Oshkosh.

Transferring a SEVIS Record From Another United States Institution
This section is ONLY for students who have entered the United States in F-1 or J-1 status already and have an “ACTIVE” SEVIS Record at another US institution.

You ONLY need to renew your F-1 or J-1 visa if your current one will expire before you travel through US customs again.

Those in F-1 status transferring a SEVIS Record are permitted to stay in the US while the SEVIS transfer is pending, as long as they will begin classes at UWO within five months of transferring out of the current school or within 5 months of the program completion date on your current Form I-20 or successor form, whichever is earlier.

Students who plan to remain in the United States while a SEVIS transfer is pending do NOT need to renew their visas, even if they are expired. A valid visa is only required when entering through US customs. It is not required to maintain F-1 status while in the US.
If you have not done so already, please inform your current Designated School Official or Responsible Officer of UWO’s SEVIS School Codes:

  • F-1 Students — UW Oshkosh Campus (Main Campus): CHI214F20164000
  • J-1 Exchange Visitors — code available by contacting iss@uwosh.edu

Haven’t Held Your Spot Yet?

If not, your first step is to fill out the Hold Your Spot form. You will need your UWO student ID number to complete this step. This was included in your admission letter and email.

The information on this page is just for international students. There are other steps that all students must complete whether they are international or domestic students. View the Admitted Student Checklist.

Special Instructions for Transfer Students

Students transferring from another institution will need to complete a few extra tasks. Find more information about transfer student next steps.

Apply for Housing

Begin your housing and dining application. You will use your UWO NetID and password to log in. There is a $75 housing deposit. Learn more about the housing and dining application and timeline.
If you have questions about this step, reach out to housing@uwosh.edu. If you are already residing near campus and believe that you are exempt from living on campus, you should complete the commuter form.

You may not enter the United States more than 30 days before your program start date unless you are transferring a SEVIS record to UWO.

International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation is designed to help students become familiar with education in the United States, learn campus resources, meet other students, and register for classes. Spring Orientation will take place from Wednesday, January 28 through Friday, January 30; this makes it important to arrive on campus on either Monday or Tuesday of that week. Information with a schedule of events for the week of orientation will be sent to new international students a few weeks before the semester begins.

Travel to Oshkosh

The University will provide free transportation from the Appleton International Airport to campus for students who arrive on Monday, January 26 and Tuesday, January 27. Please try to schedule your flights to accommodate this if possible. Students should fill out the flight confirmation form below to confirm their flight information with the university so that we will be able to pick you up.

If you choose to arrive at a different airport or will arrive before Monday or Tuesday, you should research transportation options from the airport to the city of Oshkosh BEFORE booking an airline ticket. Do NOT assume that there will be public transportation from any airport to UW Oshkosh. For any time that you will be in Oshkosh prior to orientation week, you must secure housing in an off-campus location (such as a hotel).

Complete Student Health Center Forms

The UWO Student Health Center (SHC) requires all incoming international students to submit the Tuberculosis Screening Questionnaire. Depending on the questionnaire answers, students may be required to take an IGRA Tuberculosis Test. Failure to abide by this requirement could result in a hold preventing course enrollment for future semesters.

Furthermore, students under the age of 18 MUST complete the Consent for Medical Treatment of a Minor Form to receive care at the SHC. Students under 18 must complete this with a parent or legal guardian.

Finally, there is the Authorization for Exchange of Health Information. This form is OPTIONAL and would permit the SHC to exchange information regarding your tuberculosis screening with International Student Services.

Please submit all documents applicable to you to studenthealth@uwosh.edu. More information about SHC requirements for international students is available on the Student Health Center website.

Entering the United States

Documents you must bring when going through US customs are different depending on your visa category. Please examine the appropriate checklist below:

Checklist for Entering the US: All Students

  • Passport — must be valid for at least 6 months after entering the United States. However, some countries have a treaty with the United States allowing passports to simply be valid upon entry.
  • I-901 SEVIS Fee Payment Receipt — your receipt can be accessed by clicking “Check I-901 Status” on the FMJfee.com website.
  • Bank statements or financial documents proving ability to fund your stay in the U.S.
  • Passport(s) for dependent(s), if applicable.

Additional Items for F-1 Students

  • Printed Form I-20 — must be signed with pen in the “Student Attestation” section.
  • Unexpired F-1 Visa.
  • Printed Form I-20 and F-2 Visas for dependent(s), if applicable.

Additional Items for J-1 Students

  • Printed Form DS-2019 — must be signed in the “Exchange Visitor Certification” section.
  • Unexpired J-1 Visa.
  • Printed Form DS-2019 and J-2 Visas for dependent(s), if applicable.

Healthcare and Safety

All students may take advantage of services available from experienced physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, medical technologists and health educators at the Student Health Center.

There is no charge for office visits for Oshkosh campus students. When compared with similar services offered off campus, fees charged at the Student Health Center for lab work, testing, vaccinations, medications and other services are minimal.

We strongly encourage you to visit your doctor or healthcare provider — and your dentist — one final time before you travel to the U.S. A video about the US healthcare system is available on the source page and may be helpful.

The UW Oshkosh Police Department offers a variety of programs that help educate people in ways to keep themselves and their property safe. It’s encouraged that students become familiar with the published campus safety and security procedures, as well as the emergency response and preparedness plans for events such as natural disasters. Explore campus safety resources for more information.

Students may pay UW Oshkosh tuition and student fees in the following ways. Be sure that you have access to enough money in your first week at UW Oshkosh to pay for all of your tuition and fees, books, housing, meal plan, insurance and personal expenses.

Insurance fees may not show on your Student Account until after you arrive on campus.

Credit Card

Credit card payments are not accepted in person or by telephone. Enter credit card information on TitanWeb (use your student ID to log in) under “Finances” then “Pay Bill.” A 2.75% convenience fee will be assessed on the payment amount for credit card services by the credit card company. Accepted cards: VISA, MasterCard, American Express.

Please be aware that when you are making tuition payments online through TitanWeb, you will have to make sure your browser is up to date and your pop-up blocker is off.

If you need any assistance, please contact the Help Desk at (920) 424-3020 or helpdesk@uwosh.edu.

In Person Payments — Check, Traveler’s Check or Money Order

Checks, money orders and demand drafts must be drawn on a U.S. bank and be made payable to: UW Oshkosh, Cashier’s Office, 800 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh, WI 54901, USA.

Payments can be hand delivered or mailed to the Cashier’s Office on the second floor of Dempsey Hall in the main hallway. After-hour payments are accepted through the depository box on the wall next to the cashier’s window.

Please write your student ID number on the check/money order. Allow at least 1 week for mailed payments to be received. Allow 2 weeks for bank Bill Pay payments to be received. Allow at least 3 weeks for Edvest/College Plan payments to be received. All payments must be RECEIVED by the due date.

Your cancelled check is your receipt. If a cash register receipt is needed, include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment.

In Person Payments — Cash

Students may pay at the UW Oshkosh Cashier’s Office on the second floor of Dempsey Hall in the main hallway after arrival in Oshkosh.

It is not recommended to pay the full bill in cash; students are not advised to carry more than $300 in cash when they travel, if possible, and should use one of the other payment methods available to them whenever possible.

Scholarships

UW Oshkosh tuition scholarships and external scholarships may not show on your Student Account until after you arrive on campus.
