Content editors and system administrators will use the Gutenberg editing experience.

Custom blocks have been developed to match the components in the design system. These blocks provide a powerful and flexible way to build pages in the new website. This guide serves as a resource for content editors and describes the various blocks and other functionality that are available.

Post Types

WordPress uses post types to handle different types of content and page layouts. The website has the following post types:

Pages – the Pages post type handles the bulk of the content on the new website. It is a flexible layout that is used to create the homepage, interior pages, program pages, and the program finder. The custom blocks listed below are used to create the various design components for each page.

Posts (News) – news content is created using the Posts post type. Each story can be marked with Category taxonomy terms as well as Tags. These two taxonomies allow for news listed to be filtered to display only stories matching the selected terms. The body copy of each story is created with some of the Custom Blocks listed below.

Faculty – the Faculty post type is used to create and manage the basic contact information for faculty and staff members. This information is then referenced in faculty listings across the site.

Programs – the Programs post type is used to manage the information for the program cards that display in the program finder. Each card contains the program name with a link to the program page, description text, and taxonomies for Areas, Types, Locations, and Formats. These taxonomies can be used by site visitors to filter the program finder results based on their unique interests.

Alerts – the Alerts post type is used to create and manage the site-wide emergency alert messages.

Custom Blocks

As part of the website redesign process, a new design system with new content components was developed. The blocks are assigned one of the background styles as their default, but this can be overridden by the content editor. The five available background styles are:

Default (White)

Dark

Gray

Dark/Inset

Yellow

Patterns

Synced Patterns in WordPress provide a way to create reusable content. Once a synced pattern has been created, it can be placed on as many pages as needed. This works well for information that needs to be presented on multiple pages. Examples include contact information, tables with tuition rates, or admissions requirements. The main benefits of synced patterns are only needing to create the reusable content once, and being able to edit or update it in one place.

Creating a Pattern

Go to the WordPress Dashboard.

In the left-hand menu select: Appearance > Editor.

Then select “Patterns” from the menu.

In the upper-right corner click the “Add Pattern” button.

Name your pattern.

It is important to name the pattern with enough detail for other content editors to know what information it contains.

Make sure to leave the “Synced” toggle turned on. This allows the pattern to be reused.

Use the Gutenberg editor to create the reusable content.

All of the custom block types are available to be turned into a pattern. Use the Gutenberg editor to add the block needed, and then add the content to the block.

Save the synced pattern.

Adding a Pattern to a Page

Navigate to the desired page and go to the edit screen.

Open the “Document Outline” using the toolbar in the upper-left.

Highlight the block that your want the synced pattern to appear after.

Click the “+” icon, and then the “Patterns” tab.

Find the desired pattern, and drag and drop it into place.

If the pattern does not end up in the desired position, use the “Document Outline” to move it to the correct position on the page

Editing a Synced Pattern

Go to the WordPress Dashboard.

In the left-hand menu select: Appearance > Editor.

Then select “Patterns” from the menu.

Find the pattern in the list and click the three dots next to the name. Then click “Edit”.

Make the desired changes to the pattern.

Save the pattern.

The updates will automatically be pulled onto every page where the synced pattern has been placed.

Not Synced Patterns

A number of not synced patterns have been created in the pattern library. These not synced patterns place the basic structural elements of the various page types onto a page. This is helpful for increasing the efficiency of adding new pages to the website. The process to add one of the page template patterns to a page is the same as the steps listed under the “Adding a Pattern to a Page” heading above.

Meta Data

Creating and managing meta data is important for search engine optimization. This data helps site visitors quickly find the information they are looking for while exploring the Warrington College of Business website. Meta data is created and managed using the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin.

The three most important fields are:

Focus keyphrase – this field tells the plugin what the content focus is for the page so it can provide SEO feedback and insights.

SEO title – this field sets the title of the page that will display in search engine results. It is automatically populated with token variables, but can be edited as needed.

Meta description – this field sets the page description that will display in search engine results. Best practice is to include the focus keyphrase and limit the overall character count to 160 characters or less.

These fields can be found at the bottom of the page editing screen by clicking on the “Meta Boxes” bar.

Managing URLs

The structure of a page’s URL is managed via two fields in the page settings: Slug, and Parent. The Slug field sets the final part of the URL. Best practice is for the Slug to be human readable and for it to be similar to the page title. The Parent field sets the page’s relationship to other pages on the website. When a parent is selected, the parent page’s URL structure will appear before the Slug for the current page. For example: /grandparent-page/parent-page/current-page.

Accessibility

Many digital accessibility requirements have been built into the design and implementation of the new website. There are a few accessibility items that content editors need to be aware of while creating and managing content on the website.

Alt Text – image are required to have alt text.
